Is olive pomace oil good?

With soaring olive oil prices in Spain in recent months, many consumers are looking for more economical alternatives. Among them, olive pomace oil stands out as a promising option.

Its price is undeniably more attractive than that of extra virgin olive oil (Hove), but is it really good for your health? In this article, we analyze this question in depth so that you discover whether it deserves its place in your kitchen.

What is olive pomace oil?

Let’s start with the basics: What is olive pomace oil? This oil comes from the olive tree, but it is made from the “grignon”, i.e. the residues of the olive including the skin, the pit and part of the water. In short, it is the final product of the full use of the olive.

During the extraction of virgin olive oils, about 20% of the fruit is transformed into oil, while the remaining 80% constitute the Grignon, or Alperujo. This wet greasy pomace is obtained after the first press.

The olive pomace oil is then produced by chemical or mechanical extraction of these residues, followed by a refining process, then mixed with virgin olive oil to obtain the final product.

Olive pomace oil: use and consumption

Can we eat olive pomace oil? Absolutely. It is used in particular in cooking.

Olive pomace oil is particularly suitable for frying, as it resists high temperatures without altering the taste of food. It allows you to obtain crispy and low-fatty dishes.

However, this is not the best choice for seasoning salads or spreading on bread, as its taste is less pronounced. However, it can be used to flavor certain specific dishes.

Properties and benefits of olive pomace oil

A frequent question is whether Olive pomace oil is good or bad for your health.

A study published in the European Journal of Nutrition revealed that Olive pomace oil has benefits for cardiovascular health. Indeed, it can improve lipid levels in the blood and lower LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol).

This research, conducted by the Institute of Food Science and Technology (ICTAN) of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), demonstrated that this oil, rich in oleic acid and antioxidants, can be beneficial for people in good health as well as those presenting a risk of disease cardiovascular.

Other benefits include reducing obesity, visceral fat, waist circumference and insulin levels, thanks to its bioactive compounds. However, these results are often compared to those of sunflower oil, which is less healthy than extra virgin olive oil (Hove).

Differences between olive pomace oil and hove

You now know that Olive pomace oil can be eaten safely. But what are the key differences between this oil and extra virgin olive oil?

The main difference lies in taste. Extra virgin olive oil, intense and fruity, is perfect for raw consumption, such as in salads or on toast. On the other hand, olive pomace oil has a more neutral taste, which makes it less suitable for these uses.

nutritionally, Extra virgin olive oil remains incomparable. Rich in polyphenols, vitamins and subtle aromas, it is the ideal choice for those looking for a product that is both healthy and tasty.
