Ingredients for homemade Indian naan bread

  • Wheat flour: 500 grams
  • Warm water: 250 milliliters
  • EVOO Beloleum Arbequina variety: 75 milliliters
  • dry yeast: 2 teaspoons
  • Salt: 1 teaspoon
  • Honey: 2 tablespoons
  • 1 Greek or natural yogurt
  • Optional: Sesame, cumin or fresh herbs

How to make Naan bread step by step

Do you already have the ingredients to make naan bread ready? Well, let’s get to work! As you will see, the instructions are not far from those of our Homemade bread recipe with olive oil (Another simple option and with an irresistible result, try it too if you haven’t already!).

These are the steps to follow to make your Naan Indian bread:

1. Activate the yeast

You will start by activating the yeast. In a small bowl, mix it with a tablespoon of honey and warm water. Let it sit for about 5 or 10 minutes, until foam begins to come out of the combination. It will be the sign that the yeast is already active!

2. Mix the ingredients

Take another bowl, and add the wheat flour there with the teaspoon of salt. Then make a hole in the center, and add the mixture of the yeast, the rest of the honey, the yogurt and 2 tablespoons of our extra virgin olive oil.

3. Time to knead!

With clean hands or with the help of a spatula, start kneading everything. Transfer the dough of your naan bread to a lightly floured surface, and knead it for about 10 minutes, until smooth and you have achieved an elastic texture.

4. Let the dough rest

Place the dough in a bowl with a little EVOO and cover it with a cloth, to be able to be wet. It’s time to let it rest, do it in a rather warm place.

Let it sit for at least 1 hour, and you will see its size doubles!

5. Form the Naans

Once ready, divide the dough into 8 equal portions. With the help of a little flour -whatever is necessary-, see shaping each portion.

First, flattened disc and then stretch to form oval or round buns with a slight thickness.

6. To cook your bread!

It’s time to cook your bread. And no, you’re not going to need the oven. You’re going to make it to the pan!

  • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and brush it lightly with a splash of extra virgin olive oil.
  • Place the first naan in the pan and cook until bubbles appear on the surface, for 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Flip it over and do the same with the other side until it has a slight golden touch. And so with everyone!

7. Serve it and enjoy

You already have your Indian naan bread ready. Try to serve it when it is still hot to enjoy its flavor even more.

A piece of advice? Throw a little of our EVOO on top and sprinkle the spices that you like the most. We love to also add a little sesame. And parsley or cumin give it an exquisite touch!
